Health
Why is your financial health so important? Quite simply, because it’s connected to everything else. If your financial life is suffering, other areas of your life will suffer too. That’s why getting and staying healthy with your money is so important.

This audio is a 45 minute talk I gave at Bread of Life Ministries in Mt. Juliet in April 2011. I was invited to speak to about 10 or 15 folks that day. You’ll hear basic ideas and tips on how to improve your finances. I share a bit of my story of how my wife Lynn and I got started on our journey to improved financial health.

You can improve your financial health. It’s simple, but might not be easy. Everyone is different. It takes a willingness to change and action to move you in the right direction. If you want to see improvement in this area of your life you have to be ready, willing, and able to do what it takes to see results. You’ll get some ideas in this audio on how to get started.

I was recently a caller on an internet radio show. The guest happened to be Keith Douglas. He’s the author of the book The Power to Get Wealth: No Money Required. I got to interact with both he and the host Jay King.

I came away with knowing how important it is that we define what wealth means to us. We spend most our lives chasing it in some form or fashion. So wouldn’t it make sense to clearly define what it is we’re spending so much time/effort pursuing?

The cool thing about the book title is that is mentions “No Money Required.” The secret to wealth is pretty simple. Wealth isn’t money, or possessions, or stuff. Wealth is inside you. It’s knowing who you really are. It’s knowing where your true source of abundance comes from. This is regardless of your religion. We all come from the same place.

Questions:
What does wealth mean?
How do I define it?
Why am I pursuing it?

Action:
Define wealth, write it down.
Ask yourself, “Whose definition of wealth am I pursuing?”

Annie Leonard reminds us we’re not broke. We’re squandering our resources.

We’ve been trained to think making more money will solve the problem. I say making more money isn’t the problem. It’s what we do with the money we already make that is the problem.

If we’re unhappy with what we already have, how will having more stuff make us happier? If I stink at managing $30,000 a year I’m going to really stink at handling $300,000 a year. Ouch! The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer?

That may be true, but blaming it on government won’t fix it. And, more importantly, expecting government to change isn’t going to solve anything. Only when we learn to be better stewards of our current finances at home will we be able to expect others to do the same.

Want to change the economy? We should stop giving our money to people (or corporations) who don’t support our values. Before we take that step, how about sitting down and defining our values first?

Why is the world so enamored with Apple products? Look at the corporate logo. It represents The Garden of Eden, creation, original sin. You think, subconsciously, you are literally connected to God when you buy their products.

Technology is NOT God. Apple wants you to think it is. Nothing will connect you to God but conscious effort through prayer and meditation. Your phone isn’t going to do it.

I recently had the pleasure of being a guest on a radio show. The host was Dina Harbour of Women Obtaining Wealth out of Atlanta, GA. Her organization encourages others to pursue a life of passion which will lead them to their purpose.

We discussed:
What debt is really about.
The economy is built to keep you poor.
The truth about how money is created.
Why we continue to stay in debt over and over again.
How you can change your situation.

We’ve all heard money can’t buy me love, right? I’m suggesting the one thing money can’t buy is immortality on this earthly plane. What we ultimately hope to purchase with our paper dollars is eternal life here on earth.

Everything we do revolves around the fear of physical death. If I save enough money I’ll push death further into the future. We’re racing to beat this thing called “time.”

What we are really made of is eternal, limitless, forever. What we experience here on earth is temporary. Money is just a feeble attempt to extend life here on earth. It represents our deepest fear, which is death.

How can we escape from this prison called debt? One dollar at a time. Pay your debt off. Unplug from the system one small step at a time. It’s a journey, not a destination. Becoming debt free isn’t about zero dollars owed. It’s about the person you’ll become along the way.

This loan will take 8.3 years to pay the balance. Total interest paid is $7,977.

How does the bank do this? You deposit $8,000 into your CD, checking, or savings account. Your bank pays you a whopping 1 to 2% interest for the use of your money. They turn around and lend it out and charge 19% to their customers.

Those same customers might or might not have $8,000 on deposit with the bank. Your bank is making $8,000 in interest for the use of your money. That’s a 100% return on investment for the bank. And they have the nerve to charge you an overdraft fee of $30.00 if you make a mistake in your checkbook ledger and get overdrawn once in a blue moon.

We are NOT winning this game. It was built so we would lose. Ever wonder why you can never seem to get ahead even if you’re not a spender and are a saver? Inflation is eroding your purchasing power. Inflation is an intentional tax. It’s caused when The Federal Reserve prints more money. And they call is “easing.” Easing what? Easing the pain their profit margin might feel.

The banking system known as The Federal Reserve is the most insidious system of economic slavery the world has ever known. And it’ll be 100 years old on 12/23/2013. I don’t know about you, but I won’t be sending a card or buying a birthday cake.

What to do? Get out of debt as quickly as possible. Learn to barter. Pay cash. That’s a start.

money blindfold

Are we working just for the sake of money? What’s the real reason we are awakened every morning by an alarm clock? Why do we give the best years of our lives to trading labor for currency?

Are there other ways to live? Yes. Start by reducing your debt load and work hours. You’ll find you don’t need nearly as much to live comfortably than you previously thought.

Become less and less dependent on your paycheck over time. It can be done. The money you spend, make sure part of it is going into things you are passionate about.

Don’t be “Blinded by The Benjamins” or doing things you don’t want to do just to make money. We can’t take it with us. And have you ever seen an armored truck at a funeral? I haven’t.

Questions:
Are we blinded by money?
Why do we work?
Why do we pay what we pay for things?
