Got your list of stuff you’re finally going to do? Throw it away and focus on just one thing. Stop telling the world what you’re going to do and just do it.

If you insist on making a list and you only accomplish one thing on it, then celebrate that one thing. It’s all about how bad you want to change. You don’t need a guru or a “system.” You are the answer to everything.

It’s called work for a reason. Know what you want and go get it. I recently did a 5 day bowel detox. I’m currently doing a 5 day liver detox. Then I’ll do a 5 day kidney detox. Been putting those last two off for a very long time. I finally decided to just do it.

Nothing is standing in the way of you and what you want except you. Want to know the reason for your unhappiness? Look in the mirror. Want to know the secret to your happiness? Look in the mirror.

This blog post is dedicated to my wife Lynn and aunt Tammy. They both commented on a pic from facebook that posed a most interesting question:

What would the child you once were think of the adult you have become?

The child I once was would think this of the adult I’ve become:

Hey old man. Not too shabby. Not too shabby at all. Congratulations on surviving childhood and puberty. Didn’t think you’d pull out of that marathon drinking career of yours but you did. You’re so much nicer to be around and you laugh a lot more.

You’ve still got a pretty wild imagination. But don’t keep it under your hat so much. Let it out for the world to see more often. I notice you still love to read, learn, and share knowledge with everyone around you. Don’t lose that bro. Don’t lose that.

Looks like you listened to Mom and learned to love people no matter what color their skin is or where they came from. I almost forgot. You actually are color blind! Seeing the good in most everybody means you’ve got more friends to play with. Pretty cool, huh? You edit what you say once in a while but I understand you have to sometimes do that to get along in the world.

You paid attention to Mom and Dad and learned what a sense of humor is all about. Cool beans. I’m happy you finally realized there’s nothing you’re supposed to do. Just do what makes you happy. Live for the moment. You still remember what it’s like to get excited about learning something new. And you still look forward to staying up late once in a while on a Friday night and sleeping in on Saturday.

By the way, your favorite color is blue. I think it’s great you spend most of your spare time talking to strangers on the radio. Remember, the only thing you got in trouble for in school was talking too much? Revenge is sweet, ain’t it?

Don’t be sad when other grown ups keep hurting themselves with self hate. You were once there and you eventually learned to love yourself. Give em’ time. God is whispering in their ears just like he did in yours. They’ll hear the voice.

You have a big heart. Don’t say I’m sorry for who you are. Keep waking up every day looking forward to what happens next. Teach others what you learn. It’s how us kids do it.

I just want to say how proud I am of you. I’m not mad at you for when you used to be afraid to be a kid. It’s OK to be scared sometimes. The world can be a dark place. Just remember to turn on the light switch. I know you don’t want children of your own, but If I had to pick anyone else to be my Dad, you’d be the one I’d pick.

You’re my best friend. I love you Greg.

grateful

Look around at all the people in your life and let them know how grateful you are for them. Gratitude is a currency a lot like love. It circulates from one person to another but only if you keep it moving. Kind of like pay it forward, right?

Be mindful of who/what you have in your life instead of just focusing on bringing more into your experience. This is the hardest lesson to learn.

When we learn to be grateful for what already is, we’re ultimately learning that who we are is more than enough. Nothing more needs to be added unto you.

I’m forever grateful to John Cummuta of Transforming Debt Into Wealth. His influence on me ultimately led to the birth of Debt Shepherd and fueled my passion to teach financial wellness.

Are you running on the treadmill wondering why you can’t catch the proverbial carrot? It’s because we’re chasing stuff thinking it will make us happy. Give it up. Stop while we’re ahead. Early grave is where we’re headed if we don’t.

“Most of your possessions are actually in the way of your happiness. And it’s much easier to find the path toward happiness once you’ve cleared the debris.”
– Joshua Millburn & Ryan Nicodemus (The Minimalists)

Your soul is seeking security. Security from the feeling of disconnection from God. If you’re drowning, things are like a life preserver thrown to you. They may solve a temporary problem but won’t teach you to swim.

We’ve confused substance with source. We confused the animated with the animator.

clock
Don’t wait until you’re behind on your house, car, or credit card payments to reach out and ask for help. It doesn’t have to get that bad. It’s never too late to stop what you’re doing and change direction.

Too often we don’t ask for help with our finances because of fear, ignorance, or embarrassment. Talking about our personal finances is still taboo in America. Why? Because how/where we spend our money reveals to the world exactly what’s important to us. If you’re telling the world one thing is important and your spending says otherwise, it’s time for a checkup from the neck up.

It’s never too late to ask for help. Just remember, a bankruptcy isn’t a magic pill. After the smoke clears you still have to learn to pay your bills on time and make wiser financial decisions. And, yes, a foreclosure isn’t a pleasant experience. AND it’s not the end of your life. After a foreclosure you have to live somewhere. If that means renting for a while, then so be it.

Help is out there. You have to make the first move. If there’s a funny sound coming from under the hood of your car, ignoring it isn’t going to fix it. Your money is no different. Whistling in the dark isn’t going to keep you safe. Reach out and turn on the light switch.

Are you suffering from Self-Invented Restless Dissatisfaction? First, let’s give credit where it’s due for this interesting “condition” I’m exploring. Joshua & Ryan use this term in their latest blog post Eschewing Advertising in Favor of Authentic Marketing.

So, what exactly is Self-Invented Restless Dissatisfaction? It means if we can’t seem to get our satisfaction and keep searching for it, it’s our own damn fault. We’ve invented our own unhappiness! And there are a lot of advertisers who would love to talk to us about it. Because they want to sell the instant solution (not) to our mysterious problem.

Sounds depressing, doesn’t it? There’s good news. Becoming aware you are the creator of your discontent solves 50% of the problem. Doing something about it is the other 50%, the solution. So what I’m saying is:

1) You are responsible for your unhappiness.
2) You can change it.
3) You can’t buy the solution.
4) It’s gonna take work.
5) You are 100% in control of your life.

Advertising serves a purpose. If you’re buying something you need to know if/where it’s available. Just ask yourself, “What am I buying and what problem am I trying to solve?” Always remember you can’t buy eternal life, skinny, rich, or instant happy. You’re already eternal. Skinny requires sweat. Rich requires sweat. And happiness is within.

Just take an honest inventory and ask why do I need so much? Stuff won’t fill the hole in your heart. Only love of self followed by love of others will. Stop with all the self sacrifice. If you can’t take care of yourself first, you can’t take care of anyone. Serve others, yes, but not to the detriment of your own wellbeing.

If you’re looking for a financial breakthrough, there’s something you need to know.  There are no “drive thru” breakthroughs.  Breakthroughs are a process.  You are going to be directly involved in the change that can come about in your financial life.  That’s if you are willing and take action.

How cool is that?  You’re in control.  We have to stop being passive observers in our lives, especially our financial lives.  We’ve been trained to look toward government for answers.  We idly stand by and wait for The Federal Reserve chairman to utter words of prophecy.  Prophecy my butt!

Realize you’re 100% responsible for your current financial situation.  Period.  End of discussion. Understand there’s only one economy, your economy, that you can work on right now.
What action can you take?  Listening to this podcast is a start.
